Methodology & Objectives

How is EASTGATEH2V building Slovakia’s first Hydrogen Valley

Clean Hydrogen for Eastern Slovakia
EASTGATEH2V brings together renewable hydrogen production, distribution and real-life applications to create Slovakia’s first fully integrated Hydrogen Valley in the Košice region. The project demonstrates how clean hydrogen can support greener transport, sustainable industry, improved air quality and greater energy independence for the region.

Hydrogen Production and Technology
At the core of the project is a new renewable hydrogen production facility near Košice, with a total electrolyser capacity of 4 MW, combining both Alkaline and PEM technologies. The green hydrogen produced will be distributed by road to four deployment sites across the Košice region, providing fuel for public transport, municipal services, tourism, aviation and industry.

Regional Impact: Jobs and Innovation
EASTGATEH2V is not only about technology, but also about building local expertise, creating jobs and boosting innovation in Eastern Slovakia. The project is expected to generate at least 700 new jobs during implementation, with the long-term potential to create up to 15,000 jobs as the hydrogen economy grows in the region.

Environmental Benefits and Energy Independence
The use of green hydrogen will help decarbonise transport, industry and energy systems, significantly improving air quality and reducing emissions. At the same time, the project contributes to regional energy independence, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and strengthening resilience.

A European Perspective: Cross-border Cooperation
EASTGATEH2V is part of the Central European Hydrogen Corridor — a cross-border initiative connecting renewable hydrogen from Ukraine through Slovakia and the Czech Republic to Germany. This strategic connection will help diversify Europe’s energy supply and accelerate the EU’s clean energy transition.

Our Objectives

  • 4 MW renewable hydrogen production (2 MW Alkaline + 2 MW PEM)
  • 40 hydrogen-powered public buses in Košice
  • Hydrogen garbage truck for municipal waste services
  • Touristic boat with hydrogen propulsion
  • VTOL aircraft demonstration at Košice Airport
  • Industrial hydrogen use for high-purity processes
  • At least 700 new jobs created during project roll-out
  • Up to 15,000 jobs potential through regional hydrogen economy growth
  • Cross-border hydrogen links to Ukraine, Czech Republic and Germany
  • Improved air quality, lower emissions and greater energy independence
