What is EASTGATEH2V delivering in practice
EASTGATEH2V brings green hydrogen directly into daily life across the Košice region. Thanks to local production and new infrastructure, hydrogen will fuel public transport, municipal services, tourism and industrial operations. Residents will experience the benefits through quieter zero-emission vehicles, cleaner air and the visible presence of innovative clean technologies.
The project delivers immediate economic benefits for the region. At least 700 new jobs will be created during the implementation phase across construction, transport and technical services. In the long term, the Košice region is expected to evolve into a key hydrogen technology hub, attracting new companies, investments and creating up to 15,000 jobs along the hydrogen value chain.
EASTGATEH2V positions Slovakia as a crucial link in European energy security. By connecting the Košice region to the Central European Hydrogen Corridor, the project links renewable hydrogen from Ukraine through Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany. This strengthens Europe’s energy independence and reduces reliance on fossil fuel imports.
The deployment of hydrogen-powered transport, including 40 public buses and municipal vehicles, will reduce emissions, improve air quality and lower noise pollution in urban areas. Over time, decarbonising transport and industry will contribute to achieving national and European climate goals.
EASTGATEH2V is committed to raising awareness and building public trust in hydrogen technologies. Through events, education programmes and outreach activities, the project engages citizens, schools and stakeholders, ensuring that the hydrogen transition benefits the local population and fosters broad social acceptance.
